Dr Melinda Tong, Dermatologist, Skin God.

As y'all know, I have acne problem.

For the past two years I've been spending hundreds of dollars finding my Holy Grail skincare products, but to no avail.

My skin has become worse than it has ever been, and acnes are beginning to creep onto my once pristine cheeks.  And the scars! Oh fucking acne scars.

Ok well I may be exaggerating a little, like I always do.  My acnes are not those cystic type where you can get a fever just by popping one.  It's just that I have acne and I hate it.

So, one day I decided that I had enough. It's time to see a dermatologist.

After googling high and low (which gave me little info though) and asking friends about the best doctor in town, they suggested Dr Melinda Tong, Specialist Skin Clinic.

Well, they just suggested one nameless clinic at Damai, KK; I found the name of the doctor on Google.  But there was very little information/review about it. So here's where I come in :D

According to valuable sources, this clinic only opens for first time comers on Saturdays, and no appointment is allowed.  You have to get there early, as there will be like 30-40 patients.  And they only take the first 40 patients.  First I thought that it is incredulous.  I mean, people can't be dying to see this doctor?

Or so I thought.

On a wonderful Saturday morning, I had breakfast with my family at Damai.  The clinic was just a floor above the restaurant.  I saw a weird lady in sweat clothes walking up and down the stairs.  Just thought she was weird.  My watch struck 8, but I thought meh, I don't want to look like a dork being the first to appear at the clinic when they probably haven't switch on the lights and air-conditioning.  I thought I'd enjoy my kaya-planta char-kueh for just another 5 minutes before going to the clinic.

But damn my folly.  5 minutes in and the clinic was packed.  When I got my hands on the registrar, I was patient number 21.  5 fucking minutes late and there were already 20 people before me.  What sorcery!  And I found out that the sweat pants lady was actually running up and down to check whether the clinic was already open or not.  I think she was patient number 5.

After 200 pages reading my novel, I was finally called in.

So, was she all the rage?

I fell in love the moment I saw her.  My dermatologist wet dream.

She was super friendly, super bubbly, full of spunk and very informative.  I was like, what I didn't know drinking too much cow milk can give you pimples?!  She even knew I have mild eczema the moment I walked in.  And we finished each other's sentence. "Dusts and strong perfumes make your nose..." "Itchy!" I squealed.  And she just needed to look at my palm, my back and check my mouth to decide what kind of animal my acne is.

There were a few things she said there was quite enlightening, like, a dirty face doesn't cause acne.  If it does, how come our feet are acne-free? Mind = Blown.  And that scrubs and masks aren't that good for you, well, for my skin that is.  She seemed to have a slight beef with beauticians though, especially the statement that they always tell their clients "oily skin outside, but dry inside", which is total bull, according to her.

She told me things that magazines and the Internet never say, and broke down beauty myths for me.  She is indeed a skin goddess.  Her high, rounded Botoxed cheeks are a little bit distracting, but otherwise, she is awesome.

So what was my problem? It's just bad genes (thanks, parents) and bad skin care products (sorry Watsons, you'll have many more drugstore beauty addicts).  And that I shouldn't moisturise my forehead nor apply sunblock.  Her logic - my forehead is already too oily, and as for the zero need for sunblock on the forehead - we don't get freckles on the forehead, just the cheeks.  Very, very legit.

She prescribed me a couple of oral medications and a whole new skin care products.  The good thing about the products is that they are of mixed brands, so I know she's not the ambassador of whatever products.

Besides helping me clear my acne, she also helped me find my Holy Grail products.  These are what she prescribed me:

Antibiotics.

Oral acne treatment medication.

Cleanser.

Sunblock.  That costs a bomb.

Night moisturizer.

Make-up remover.

Day acne gel.

Night acne gel.  But I already have this at home.

And a complimentary petroleum jelly.  'Coz the acne medication will burn the bejezus out of my mouth/lips area.

The total damage? RM600 + 4 hours of wait.  Will it finally solve my woe?  We'll have to wait.

I'd better look like Miss World in one month's time, Dr Melinda.

P/s:  If you have horrible skin too, or just plain vain in need of a fix, you can visit this her at Lot 1-1, Block A, Damai Plaza IV, KK (above Diriwan).  It's where the food court is.  Or you can call the clinic at 088-250275.

That's the same dermatologist who told Alvin's kid sister that she only needs to wash her face with water and soft cloth..no need of facial wash anything. And she got cured!....ada lah juga kali bah dia kena kasi antibiotics and such but i actually follow the water and soft towel ritual for 2 years, with the occasional use of facial wash (bcos gatal juga mau try2 product)...amazingly, the routine works to minimize my pimples. kalau tumbuh pun 1-2 during menses saja.

Amanda Christine Wong said...

carol: low maintanence la kamu ni kan. pakai air ja. jealous! but i think coz u are blessed with naturally good skin, so no need all those chemicals. i wish sy pun kena ckp gitu, nda payah jg beli all those skincare!

Sounds promising.Hope your skin will get better,Amanda.I normally have just pimples during menstruation. Did she say that eating certain or more fruits is good too?

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Naomi: Uhuh. Well, she did mention that veges are good. But that's a no-brainer. Thanks! and thank ur lycky stars u are blessed with wonderful skin!

chegu carol said...

naturally blessed skin? ha! u shud ask si con how my skin looked like before. or maybe shud ask my mom directly cos she's the one yg kept pestering me about my 'teenage skin'.

but to think of it again, my pimples got worst when i spent tons of product to get rid of them. sekali nda suda berabis pakai product, it got better. perhaps, ada juga ckp ko betul la..that i wasn't suppose to use chemicals to treat my pimples in the first place.

@carol:
Haha...mahal lagi tu semua all those products kan. i blame their very convincing ads :p

Love this post, for the obvious reasons :D

"...rounded, botoxed cheeks"?! That sentence alone makes me wanna go and see her. Hehehe

Btw Manda, can you share ALL the beauty myths/ insights the goddess told you? The cow's milk revelation really took me by surprise. Apa lagi? ^__^

@Sheila:

OMG. now i'm scared if it doesn't work! >.<

how is your skin going? showing some result or not? i went to see her last week. it cost me around rm300. hmm. now my skin is so dry. maybe the differin effects :/

Amanda Christine Wong said...

@Anon:

Hey! Well, initially my acnes got worse than ever, then slowly it decreases. Acnotin is supposed to do that. And it removes oil from my face, n now it is oil free, albeit slightly dry. n i do still have break outs, but it dries up fast. If she prescribed u acnotin, that should be the cause of dryness. And yes, the differin and rozex are drying as well. Do drop by once again and let me know when ur skin has improved :D

avila said...

interesting ... thanks for sharing.

Amanda Christine Wong said...

@avila:

My pleasure :)

so hows ur skin? is it finally free from acne? i would like to ask the cost for removing permanent acne scar like belubang2 that?

Amanda Christine Wong said...

@Anon: Well, since i'm slowly decreasing the intake of my meds, I do get an occasional zit. for facial scars, i think she will recommend laser...

Anonymous said...

Hey can u give me more info on how to get to that clinic ? I really need it. Thanks a lot !

Amanda Christine Wong said...

@Anon: Hey! It's at Damai. There's a 4D shop at the corner of a row of shop lots. Her clinic is just above the 4D shop. The area where there's lots of restaurants and tables in between the shoplots.

Amanda Christine Wong said...

@noel valentine:

Hey! I still get mild breakouts occasionally, especially during that time of the month. And it's still oily, but otherwise, I'm happy with the result. For your case, it could be hormones or stress. :)

Hey Amanda, how many times have to visited Dr. Melinda Tong? And how much does she charged every visit? I am 19 years old, and have terrible acne some of them are big and my friends who also suffer from acne suggest me to go visit Dr. Melinda, I can see that my friend pimples have slowly decrease but still need to go back occassionally. So are you still going back right now?

Thank you for sharing

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Hi! I think i have visited her up to 10x in a few years span.first time consultation is rm70,and the follow up is rm50 if im not mistaken.since my skin cleared up already, she said i didnt hv to go back there already, just continue with the skin care regime she provided.so i think it will be the same for u..

Anonymous said...

I see... because I got 2 friends who suffer from terrible acne, 1 of them go to see Dr. Melinda and the other went to see Dr. Sidhu. The one went to Dr. Sidhu was very surprised cause she just went 2-3 times and her faces become more smooth and soft. Did you hear of Dr. Sidhu before? He and Dr. Melinda are the finest skin specialists in KK

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Yes,i've heard of him before..but i have never met him.if u can get an appointment with him,u can try.coz u cant set an appointment with dr melinda if u are a first timer.u hv to walk in and queue up on saturday morning..

About the facial scar, have you got yours cured? If ya, don't mind sharing your experiences? As I also have fewer of it, and I hate it so much haha

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Darkened scars seem to be gone, but pitted scars are still there, yet only obvious if you zoom in your view.haha.for chronic scars, the only way to get rid of them is by laser treatment

Anonymous said...

So did you ask about the price for laser treatment at Dr.Melinda clinic?

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Nope..coz i know should be 1k above.haha

Anonymous said...

Haha thank you for sharing but I think I am going to Dr. Sidhu there soon.

Hello Amanda . Did you do a blood test before the doctor prescribed you the Acnotin?

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Hi Elson. No I didnt..

Elson Lim said...

Last week I consulted the doctor. She did a blood test for me and showing that I was not eligible for the Acnotin or Oratane. Are you still consuming the antibiotic now btw? :)

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Oh she did?i guess it depends on your condition.i stopped the antibiotics looong time ago, when there were no more angry red acnes

Elson Lim said...

Yes she did. I think so. Are you still using her skin care products ? How long did you take the antibiotic ya?

Amanda Christine Wong said...

I think i took it for about 3 months.and yes i am still using her skin care products.im scared to switch to others.and i dont do the things she told me not to anymore like going for facials or using masks,so taking care of my skin now is quite low maintanence..

Elson Lim said...

Yaya same with you . I'm pondering why I don't have the Differin which use at night ? I need to use twice daily for the Rozex . She told me my skin is sensitive type. So I don't have the moisturiser and the sun block.

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Oh i think it's because differin is stronger than rozex.it can cause peeling for sensitive skin..maybe moisturiser and sunblock are also too strong for your skin..

Elson Lim said...

Ohh, really? Did your skin peel last time when you used differin? And are you still using the rozex and differin for now ?

What are you talking about? A quick google search would bring up hundreds of millions of sources from articles to youtube videos and informative, legit, no-frills websites such as Paula's Choice, Futurederm, skincea, just to name a few. A lot of those sources state that Dairy causes acne for SOME people, cause it messes with your hormones. Now, I'm not you, so I'm not sure if I've actually done the whole elimination or "isolation" process to find your acne triggers. I feel like you are immensely uninformed about a plethora of things....
Yeah there's a lot of fad, shady websites but to be fair there's a load of legit ones to balance it out too...Yes, a "dirty" face doesn't cause acne, everyone knows that, otherwise you'd never get acne if all you'd have to do is cleanse your face everyday. Acne is caused my dead skin cells mixed with sebum. You can't really control your sebum production (except through Accutane, she gave you fucking accutane, for your MILD acne??!?!?) The horror! (I'll get to that later.) - since it's down to your genetics. Dead skin cells can be easily taken care of using a BHA and/or AHA....Since BHA exfoliates inside the pores+surface and AHA exfoliates on the surface with BHA geared more towards acneic skin and AHA leaning towards dry, flaky and aging skin. I also scoffed when you mentioned that actually likened the feet to the face.
Also, I do not think you need a detective (in this case, a quack.) to actually spot that you have eczema, or that you're allergic to pollens and dustmites and what have you. Judging by the picture attached, you do have a fairly oily forehead. She is a retard for having the GALLS to tell you that you do not need to apply sunblock or moisturizer on that area.
First things first, you HAVE TO apply a moisturizer even on oily areas of your face. If you don't your skin will get dehydrated because it will end up producing MORE sebum to compensate for the lack-there-of. You just gotta pick lightweight, fluid, lotiony type of gels&moisturizers so it doesnt clog your pores (causing closed comedones) or turn you into a greaseball.
While we're on that note, the thing beauticians an estheticians tell you about the oily and dry shit are correct. Just is the way they put it (or articulate) doesn't make a boatload of sense. what they're trying to describe is DEHYDRATED SKIN. It's when your skin is both "dry" and "oily" at the same time. As in it LOOKS oily but is actually DRY to the touch. it is a sign of damaged skin barrier/acid mantle/epidermis. it's mainly caused by overexfoliation and using drying, irritating skincare products such as alcohol.

Okay now the sunblock crap. The sun contains two types of UV rays, UVA(ging) and UV(Burning) rays. You do get freckles on your forehead. or any where on your skin. You are dark-skinned so your skin is more resilient to the harmful UV rays. BUT that doesn't mean the rays aren't damaging your skin, you just don't SEE it with your naked eye. UVA rays cause wrinkles, loss of elastin, collagen and thins your skin. It just takes a whole lot longer for it to show than it is when you get a sunburn or when you tan (caused by uvb rays). UVA rays penetrate the windows but uvb doesnt so thats why you dont get sunburns indoors. uva is accumulative and by the time you notice it it will already be all too late. In a nutshell, sunscreen is beneficial for you in the long run. Aka Basically, she's trying to kill you.
Last but not least, SHE GAVE YOU ACCUTANE. Do you even know what accutane is? Your skin's not even that bad, just probably dehydrated, this causing more pimples and cloggies. Accutane is the LAST RESORT for acne! it's for those severe, cystic, pus-filled acne that do not respond to topical treatments at all! Accutane can srsly fuck up your system. Have you researched anything on it? it can give you muscle, joint pains, cause extreme fatigue, depression, suicidal thoughts, blurred vision, headaches, cracked lips, dry skin, redness, irritation, and a whole arsenal of fucks.
Anything taken orally for acne (accutane, birth control pills and antibiotics) risk posing major threats to your well-being. Long-term use of antibiotics can screw you over real bad, killing both the bad AND the good bacteria in your body, and you also risk developing antibiotic resistance. A lot of derms usually prescribe Benzoyl peroxide or retinoids to lower the chances of the bacteria developing antibiotic resistance.
I lied. Regarding the products she gave you, LRP sunscreen is good. The rest I've heard of but never used. I don't know about vanicream but the rest of the products excluding cetaphil cleanser are okay. Cetaphil is bad news for you. it's that thing you would stay MILES away from if you knew how damaging and stripping it is to your skin. Google it. it will make your skin even more dehydrated causing MORE acne.
I do realize that it's been 4 years since your post. I just hope I could reach out to someone out there so they don't have to waste so much money for that quack. I also use differin and that's all I needed, my skin was like your photo too, except it got a lot better after 3-4 months use of differin. All you needed was just a well-researched skincare routine and tretinoin cream/gel.
God bless. pardon the french.

Amanda Christine Wong said...

Hey there..Wow,you really have done your research! Well, 4 years ago I was just this naive pimply girl desperately in need of help, I'd do/believe anything, especially if that person is a doctor. Despite all the things you said, thank goodness my skin is still flawless from her treatment.thanks for the enlightment though.
